South Africa holds rate on inflation risk, cuts GDP forecast

South Africa's central bank held its benchmark repurchase rate steady at 5.0 percent, as expected, but cut its growth forecast and appealed for price and wage restraint to avoid higher inflation.
The South African Reserve Bank (SARB), which cut rates by 50 basis points in 2012, painted a bleak picture, saying domestic growth prospects were fragile, consumer confidence was low, the mining sector was plagued by continuing disruptions, the supply of electricity was constrained and the global economic environment was weak.
South Africa's rand currency has been falling in value, down by some 4.6 percent against the U.S. dollar since late March, as the confidence of investors since mid-2012 has been undermined by fraught labor relations and high wage demands, especially in the mining sector, and worries over a growing balance of payments deficit due lower commodity prices and mining exports.
"The current level of the exchange rate, if sustained, poses a significant upside risk to the inflation outlook," the SARB said in a statement.
The central bank cut its 2013 growth forecast to 2.4 percent from 2.7 percent and to 3.5 percent from 3.7 percent for 2014. In 2012 South Africa's Gross Domestic Product grew by 2.5 percent.
By 2015, SARB expects economic growth to accelerate to 3.8 percent, with the negative output gap starting to close that year after widening this year.

In the fourth quarter of 2012, South Africa's GDP expanded by 2.1 percent from the third quarter for annual growth of 2.5 percent, up from 2.3 percent.

"It seems that the recent rise in interest rates, instead of the typical (pre-depression) behavioral tendency to make people nervous and rush to lock in low rates, has once again stalled any hope of an organic housing recovery occurring. While the reams of hard data show that the housing recovery remains a fast-money investment-driven enigma (here, here, and here) - as opposed to real confidence-driven house-buying; we are still told day after day that housing is the backbone of the economy (despite construction jobs languishing and affordability plunging again). The fact of the matter is that the last 2 weeks have seen mortgage applications plunge at their fastest rate for this time of year (a typically busy time) since the financial crisis began. But that doesn't matter because housing must be recovering because the homebuilder ETF is up 2% today...*January and February we saw the rate rises (blue line dropping) spark a renewed (more behaviorally normal) interest in locking in low rates and buying... but since then the relationshio has invferted once again as the Bernanke put on bonds has now found its way into the real world. The last 2 weeks have seen rates rise and mortgage apps plunge..."

Ghana raises rate 100 bsp on growing risks to inflation

Ghana's central bank raised its policy rate by 100 basis points to 16.0 percent, saying the growing risks to the inflation outlook outweighed the risks to economic growth.
The Bank of Ghana, which raised its rate 250 basis points last year in response to rising inflation, said inflation in April rose for the third month in a row, pushing up the bank's central path of its forecast by a percentage point.
In addition to its rate rise, the central bank said it was realigning its policy corridor by widening the band. The reverse repo rate will now be 200 basis points above the policy rate while the repo rate will be 100 points below it. The bank also plans to introduce a "informal standing facility" to improve the transmission mechanism of its monetary policy.
The central bank said the major upside risks to its inflation outlook were heightened inflation and exchange rate expectations, lingering fiscal pressures, challenges in the energy sector, the effect of weakened commodity prices on the external sector, and the likelihood of full cost recovery in the energy sector.
In April Ghana's inflation rate rose to 10.6 percent from 10.4 percent in March, highest since May 2010, due to the continued effect of upward adjustment in petroleum prices in February.

"Food prices continue to pose significant near-term risk to the inflation outlook. The inflation profile is therefore currently dislodged from trends over the recent past," the central bank said.
The central bank had earlier been optimistic about achieving its year-end target of 9.0 percent inflation, plus/minus 2 percentage points.
Ghana's trade deficit has widened further due to lower international commodity price, which have fed through to lower export earnings, resulting in heightened exchange rate pressures. Ghana is the world's largest cocoa producer.
Through mid-May from January, Ghana's cedi currency has depreciated by 2.3 percent against the U.S. dollar, while in the first quarter the real exchange rate had risen by 5.9 percent.
Gross international reserves eased to US$ 5.2 billion at the end of April, the equivalent of 2.9 months of imports, down from US$ 5.4 billion at the end of December.
The central bank said the pace of domestic economic growth was weakening, with business and consumer sentiment about growth softening "amid heightened inflation expectations." The growth of credit to the private sector had also moderated.
Ghana's Gross Domestic Product expanded by 2.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012 from the third for annual growth of 6.0 percent, down from 7.0 percent in the third quarter, the lowest growth rate since second quarter of 2010.
Growth in 2012 eased to 8.0 percent from 2011's rapid pace of 15 percent as oil came on stream.

A Sample Trading Routine

1. Wake up around 6 AM CST

2. Head to the bathroom, immediately check account on my smartphone

3. Go to bathroom to freshen up.

4. Pour my morning vitamin/mineral mix (Tangy Tangerine).

5. Head to computer to look at charts and email; adjust positions if needed. Usually I don't need to, and usually I'll know when I need to monitor positions more closely because price has been approaching key support/resistance levels.

6. By this time it is usually around 8 AM CST. Starting at 8 AM CST, I check charts and my account every 4 hours thereafter until 12 AM. Usually I am checking my account more often -- like when I am standing in line or something -- though I think this is a bad habit that does little more than invite emotional distress. I use my smartphone and a variety of laptops (depending on where I am located during the day) to charts and my account. Sometimes I do miss this, such as if I am out at a restaurant with friends it can be difficult to check charts; in such instances I've missed trades. I do set an alarm on my smartphone to serve as a reminder, and I can usually tell based on price action when I will need to place closer attention. Sometimes the market is quite distant from a support/resistance level I am keeping an eye on and so I only need to quickly glance to make sure price is still far away.

7. I check news throughout the day. My fundamental perspective determines which currencies I'll trade and in what directions I'll trade them, though as I take a longer-term fundamental outlook, I'll usually maintain the same perspective for years at a time, and will be thinking about when I want to change the currencies/direction I wish to trade in well in advance. There is no sense of immediacy or urgency in terms of monitoring the news, so I just incorporate it naturally -- I enjoy reading anyway. If there is a subject I wish to delve into in greater detail, I'll usually look for a thorough book on the subject. I use an RSS reader (netvibes.com) as my primary way of monitoring the news.
