hi kyle,
just a paper loss today? anyway, i wouldn't suggest to learn too long with a demo account. of course it is important to understand how the trading software works before putting real money into the game ... but if you want to learn s.th. about your emotions and about trading strategies which fit to you (your risk tolerance? your stop loss & profit taking limits? etc.), you should trade with VERY SMALL AMOUNTS, but with real money i think ...
few years ago i've started with DJIA trades in my CFD account because my broker doesn't charge commissions for indexes & commodities, so i had to pay just the spread (~ 4 DJIA points) ... and i've discovered that there were the same emotions concerning happiness & desperation when i've traded 1 DJIA contract as when i've traded 10 or more contracts
... with 1 contract i won/lost $1 per DJIA point and after 10-15 trades per evening usually won/lost about $30 ...btw, i've seen daytrading prolly wasn't my determination (see my old blog post for further details: jaro gruber ;-): DAY-TRADING DOESN'T FIT MY PERSONALITY ;o((), therefore i've expanded my trading time frame from few seconds/minutes to few days/weeks and hold mostly commodities now ... and of course, there are also fewstock investments in parallel running on different account ...
good luck :-),

Once you establish your trading plan and are comfortable with the actual trading software, I think it is important to jump into the real deal with very small size and get a feel for trading. Remember the majority of trading is psychological and with a demo account you are missing out on that whole aspect of trading.Posted 07-25-2009 at 08:34 PM by BrendanEgan88
