Using Range Bars to Find Trends

One subject we don't have much coverage of in InformedTrades University is that of range bars. Well, I think it's time for a reversal on that trend! Here is a video explaining range bars, and offering a perspective on how to use them to find trends.

Feel free to share any other resources on range bars that you think would benefit our community in the comments section below.

If you google range bars you wont find much out there, but they are a blessing to me. I first learned about them about 2 years ago from my mentor, and have been hooked ever since. I learned to trade on them, but if you were used to time charts it would take a leap of faith to change over. But I will tell you this, all markets are driven on price action and no one will argue that, so wouldnt you want to trade with a bar chart driven only on price action? Range bars are drive only on price action not on time ,volume or anything else just pure price action. Right now I have a stop limit order on each end of my range bar because there is massive volume on that one bar so I know for a fact that witch ever way it closes and witch ever stop limit gets filled I will have a 4 tick winner for sure no doubt in my mind. You cant do that with any other bar system. You can make the market transparent and dissect it to your advantage! One of the bigest and best advantages to range bars are finding support and resistance levels they make clear as day!

I prove my point, it closed up and filled for 4 ticks. Range bars and volume a very powerful tool. Thats all I have to say about Range Bars. But tell me can you do that with any other bar system?

Im afraid this topic wont go very far since im the only one on the site that trades range bars. Everyone argues that if range bars are so great why arnt more traders using them? Or if range bars are so great then why dont professionals trade them? All very good ?'s and I dont know the answer except people dont like change. If some one tryed to get me to change over to a new concept I wouldnt do it. But good try Simit ! It will take time for the concept to grab hold. If a trader had an extra screen to run range bars next to there time chart it would be a great help to take entries and exit on trades giving you less exposure and better fills smaller stop loss and better money mang! But dont try this if you are a commented time traveler, because before you know it you will be hooked and using range bars exclusivly. Have fun in your time travels!!

Morgan there is really not much out there, if you go on youtube the school of trade has alot of videos but they dont show you much because they want your bussiness. The best way to reserch range bars is to put them on your chart and study the price action reacting to s/r levels and your indicators. They really simplfy price action and if you put some effort into your study of them you will begin to see the advatages to them and you to will be hooked! I wish I could help dirrect you to some information out there other than the basics but its not out there , I have looked. No stratigies nothing I have devoloped my own stratigies over the two years ive been trading them. They work great using s/r and volume and candle patterens that you would learn to see that repeat all the time. Ive learned to take advantage of the patterens repeating them self constintly. My posts show my stratigies but its always better to develope your own and then they are personal to you and you will be more confortable trading them. My mentor that showed range bars to me him and I trade nothing alike . Our trading styles are very different and since I have gottten my own style I am more profitable. He always told me that I would end up with a different trading style than his and that he has a total different style than his mentor.

I have been a 'range trader' in ES and 6E for well over 12 months and now feel in 'control' of my trading....and profitable...

I use range for all my trading charts with the exception of one...a volume chart on ES...the ranges vary between a 'small' 4 tick bar and a 15 tick bar for different strategies.

I would be happy to discuss the merits of range bars and the video was spot on...

David

P.S....please do NOT go near Schoolof Trade....!!!
