Hey Price,

Glad to hear from you and welcome to the community.

I have not taken any of his courses nor do I know anyone who has, but I do watch his youtube videos and I find them to be high quality.

Best Regards,
Dave

I got a chance to review Dr. Barry Burns' Trading course over at Top Dog Trading (Click HERE to visit site), and I wanted to give you guys an honest opinion about its contents. I know that the majority of you guys are relatively new to this business and I thought this would be a good multimedia learning tool to help solidify some of the integral elements of a good trading plan. I believe this course is very good for that and more. First let me say that Dr. Burns' methodology could not be more different than mine. That being said, I am amazed at the similarities in his insights regarding trader psychology. Apart from the basic outline of the key elements of his methodology, I found that the real gems are found when he discusses his methods on the videos. During this time he demonstrates very well the knowledge and wisdom that makes it clear to me that he is a veteran trader.

The course begins with a .PDF manual to introduce the concepts which you will later experience in the videos. The manual is fairly well written and accomplishes well the goal of helping you to understand his methodology. Then we get to the videos. This is where the course really finds its value I think. There are numerous videos with this course and each of them focuses on a different aspect of his methodology. The videos held value for me personally not because of the outline of his methodology (probably because I already have my own) but because of the veteran trader narrative which is peppered with timeless trading rules and angles which help a beginner to get into the mind of a pro and learn what makes him tick. In my experience the best thing you can learn from anyone about trading is how to approach it. Sadly, most prospective traders spend a lot of time and energy trying to adopt some other traders methodology and it never quite works out like they had planned. This is because each trader has to build his/her own strategy which is based on their own personality. Dr. Burns mentions this a few times in the course as well. That being said though, I think the mechanics of his methodology has the potential to be of great help to those learning trading. Most of the time when a trader develops his own trading methodology it is not entirely original. It usually ends up being composed of bits and pieces of other strategies that the trader has been exposed to along the way. I think Dr. Burns' methodology can serve as a good template for building your own plan. The important thing in developing your own strategy is depth of knowledge. You not only need to know what elements will make it up, but which ones won't as well, and you can't get an accurate depiction of the possible tools you will use without seeing what's out there to choose from.

Now let's talk about what I didn't like about the course. Well, for one the production value is pretty low in the vids. There are not many bells and whistles in this course. At times it feels a little dry when trying to take in all of the information. I don't know, maybe some of you prefer less fluff though. Also, and this might sound really lame to some of you, but the colors he uses for his MA lines and charts are totally from the eighties. Colors like magenta and cyan blue....lol...maybe it's just me, but I can't stand those colors. I would still say the material value far outdoes the color scheme choices though. If any of you get this course I encourage you to leave a review here as well and let us know what you though of it, MA colors and all..ah, ok on a more serious note now.

Very often I see new traders thirsting for knowledge from someone who has been there, done that and I think sometimes we overlook some of the best learning tools like books, magazines, and courses like this one. I would say one good route a new trader could take is read High Probability Trading and then follow it up with this course.

Well, I hope this could be of help to you guys. I honestly do believe this course would help you become a better trader. It's just a matter of shelling out the cash to get it, which by the way doesn't seem to be overly ridiculous considering the value of the course. I think the course is $495 for course 1 and 2, but if I'm not mistaken if you take his free 5-day video course I believe he knocks that down to $295 for both courses, which then becomes pretty reasonable. You can check out the free course HERE. I'm pretty sure the vids are available as soon as you sign up. If anyone checks out that free course let us know what you think. I actually haven't seen it yet.

This is the first of hopefully many reviews of trading courses and trading books alike. I know that my next review will be of Timothy sykes' Pennystocking DVD's since they are on the way to me as I type this. So I look forward to sharing my thoughts on that course as well. Shoot.

Update: 3/16/09

Hey everyone,
I've just been notified by Barry that he's just come out with a new swing trading course and apparently he says it's been a good seller so far. I haven't checked it out yet, but HERE is the link for it if you are interested. Shoot.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~
Update 4/19/09
Hey Everyone,
Dr. Barry Burns was kind enough to provide a copy of the new Swing Trading Course entitled Top Dog Trading Intermediate Course/Swing Trading With Confidence so I could review it. Much like his first two volumes the course begins with a .pdf manual which is pretty much just a basic outline of what is in the videos to come. The videos are numerous and each run about a half hour making the course seem much more like a seminar than a conventional educational trading course.
In the first part of the course Dr. Burns spends a good amount of time on volume and offers expert insight on it's utilization as well as understanding the context in which it should be utilized. In later parts of the course Barry focuses on relative strength and even how to use options to compliment your normal swing positions. I personally got a good deal out of this course as it was geared towards more of an intermediate crowd. Throughout the whole course he was speaking a language I could understand.
There were also some things I didn't necessarily like about the course. One of them was that the videos were a bit long for me and I think he could have organized the information in them a little better to speed up the process, but on the other hand the way that he presents this information is very casual and relaxed which also makes it easier to take in. So I think it just comes down to personal preference.
Barry speaks in a very calm and easy to understand manner. In this course, which is geared toward people who have at least a little background in trading, he gently lays out some impressive ideas regarding trading psychology.I think in this course Barry takes the time to really elaborate on each and every aspect of his thought processes when trading. I see this as an advantage over other courses I've seen because it is more than just information, which is useless to the learner if he/she has no appreciation for such information. So when Barry expounds on his thoughts about the information he offers he also teaches you why the information is relevant.
All in all I think this course could be a very positive step in your trading education and I personally recommend it.
Here is an outline of the pros and cons of this course.
Pros
Barry does a fine job of introducing and elaborating on valuable trading information.
Plenty of material to digest and learn from.
Great as either a supplement to his earlier courses or just for someone who is inerested in learning to trade the markets.
Barry offers excellent post course support for those who still have inquiries after completion of the course.
Cons
At times the videos run a little long and feel slightly drawn out.
Depending upon your standard of living the price could be considered fairly steep.
The production value of the course could be considered sub par.
I don't personally rely on indicators as much as Dr. Burns does and so obviously I don't feel that learning about them is of much value, but I will say that in this course it seems he relies more on market principles than indicators, but still the whole indicators thing sort of repels me.
So there it is, the review of Dr. Barry Burns' new Swing Trading Course. You can also find his complimentary 5 day course HERE.
If anyone gets this course or has already taken it please tell us what you thought about it here. Thanks, Shoot.
Hello everyone, I'm new here but I thought id drop my two cents into the bucket. I've taken this course and can say that it helped me a ton when I first started out. Most of the way I use TA now is due to what I've learned from his course, and a few others also. Thanks, totalstrength.
Needle in a heystack...
I really appreciate trusted members and Dave reviewing products... I wish there was more of that. There is just so much out there for a neophyte like myself to sift through.
Thanks Dave giving all of this forum and thank you shoot for your take. The more opinions from you and other senior members the better.
Hello everyone,
I have just looked at all of the free videos from Dr. Barry Burns and I would say they are great because he focuses dearly on market psychology and what moves the market! However, I would never pay for more information. As Shoot said new traders like myself are always trying to find comfort from others instead of coming up with our own ideas.
In addition, if a person really wants to learn investing, day trading, or swing trading he or she will search the web because all the information is out there a person just has to find it. For example, just look at the great information this site provided! There are also lots of books at the library that give information!!
I feel people that sell systems or advice or whatever they sell are just trying to give shortcuts to something that takes time to build which is a sound trading methodology.
Happy trading to all and happy new year!
The bottom line is whether a person wants to go to the effort of developing a personalized trading system which entails research, tweaking, papertrading, time, etc., or finding an existing method that fits his/her trading personality (I don't think any existing method will be an exact fit). The question is whether that person wants to re-invent the wheel or not.
Just my opinion.
Hi
I feel I can comment given I am a student of Dr Burns. I have taken both his fundamental courses and find them excellent both content wise and value for money.
He passes on his years of trading experience, answers mails himself and in addition to being a very smart man, he is indeed a gentleman. I would have no hesistation in recommending him .
